Photographer Matt Albiani Focuses his Lens on Lifeguards Across the USA, Raising the Question… Which Way to the Beach?
To most of us beach bums, lifeguards look like vaunted kings in their wooden castles, lording over both our safety in the waves and our red-shorted nap-time fantasies. But to photographer Matt Albiani, they’re art.
In his lush first book, Lifeguard on Duty, Albiani explores the very un-Baywatch life of guards, showcasing their camaraderie, strength, and solitude. Inspired by his six-year stint in the ’90s as a lifeguard at pools and summer camps in Massachusetts, Albiani traveled the coastlines of the United States from Oahu to Florida to Nantucket for four years to get the shots.
“This is a bit of a wish fulfillment for me,” he admits, “for the summer I never had as an ocean guard.”
(Book expected late this summer from Antinous Press/powerHouse Books)

Hangin’ with a Hotter Crew
Matt Albiani is living the good life.
After starring on Fordham’s rowing team in the early ’90s, Albiani has hit the big-time as a major freelance fashion photographer.
Albiani has been the master lensman behind fashion shoots for Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, J. Crew and yes, Victoria’s Secret, shooting some of The Score’s favorites like Osi Umenyiora’s squeeze Selita Ebanks, Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio for this past fall’s catalog.
“We did that whole shoot in Bodega Bay outside of San Francisco,” Albiani said. “It was a nine-day shoot.”
His resume as rower for Fordham (1990-94) is as impressive, leading the team to undefeated seasons and the elusive Dad Vail championship. He’ll be inducted into the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame today.
